Coordinate measurement is a standard task in today's industrial applications. A coordinate measurement machine for industry has to meet several demands, including robustness, accuracy, usability, and flexibility. With our TRACKPACK /IS cameras we have designed a new tracking solution for the industrial environment.
With our tracking an application now has eyes and the ability to check and approve all production steps, such as
- is the worker or the robot on the right position?
- where is the object to be worked on?
- is the right tool being used?
- what should be done on this position?
- is the torque correct for this screw?
- are all screws processed with the individual adjustment?
- where is the error? and so on…

Tool Tracking combines the flexibility of manual processing with the accuracy needed for quality assurance. ART brings experience from several projects concerning tool tracking for industrial and medical applications to all their tracking solutions.
Using the 3D information (position and rotation) of the tracking system, Tool Tracking can check and log if every working position has been stepped through with correct adjustments, and in the correct order – in fact it may be difficult to achieve this sort of quality assurance by any means other than a tracking system.
- Tool configuration - The system can give assistance by automatically configuring the tool (for example, a screwdriver's torque) to the current working conditions.
- Guidance for the worker - The worker can be directed from one working position to the next, by using a display mounted onto the tool or a monitor next to the working space which shows the worker the next position on a picture. The tool can be locked until the worker is in the right position.
- Documentation – Every position (e.g. screw) can be recorded with the time, the angle and the torque – depending on the application of each customer.
Physical prototypes or products can be very costly and have limited availability. In such cases, training tasks can be performed in VR as well. In these applications the user holds physical props, which are tracked, and performs the movements which should be trained. Using a tracked device allows the application to verify the movement and give feedback on performance. One task trained in VR is the movement of a sealing gun.
While the use of industrial robots is nowadays commonplace, research in robotics is ongoing. This applies to the improvement of usability of standard industrial robots as well as to the development of new designs.
In robot research and development, ART systems are used to precisely localize autonomous robots and limb positions. We provide tracking volumes from small laboratory setups up to large outdoor tracking areas.
In industrial robot applications, ART and our partners can help to overcome the laborious classical teaching processes such as lead-through or offline-programming, and substitute them by simpler procedures, e.g. using a pointing device.
The combination of eye tracking with optical head tracking gives accurate lines of sight, while the user is able to move freely within the tracking area. Several interfaces allow the use of our cameras with eye tracking systems. Please refer to the respective websites for more information.
Interface for ASL EYE-TRAC® 6 series
With support of EST and Immersion we developed an interface for the EYE-TRAC® 6 series (tested with version 184.108.40.206 and 220.127.116.11) from ASL. The interface provides the conversion from our format to the ASL data format. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like to use this interface.
Interface for SMI Eye Tracking Devices:
SMI Eye Tracking Glasses (www.eyetracking-glasses.com) advance mobile eye tracking applications in CAVE environments and other virtual worlds. With ART’s targets, Volfoni’s ActiveEyeTM technology and the VRPN interface, SMI's glasses-type eye tracker combines mobile eye tracking with realistic 3D user experience and full head and motion tracking support. As part of the RAiCe project, the DLR connected a TRACKPACK system with an iView X™ eye tracking from SMI in order to track several persons in the Tower- or Cockpit-Simulator at the German Aerospace Center. Please contact the DLR for more information.
Interface for Arrington Research Eye tracking systems
ART tracking has also been interfaced with eye tracking systems from Arrington Research. This interface was developed by the A.I. Group at Bielefeld University, Germany, as part of the research project SFB 673. Click here to see a video about the developments.
